Brazilian IPL Hair Removal

Brazilian IPL Hair Removal

Is it for You?

by Maripet L. Poso

There are probably a few things in the world more painful (and mortifying) than Brazilian waxing. Imagine being naked and spread like an eagle in full view of the waxing attendant, while she meticulously makes sure that no single strand of hair is left on your private part, lest she’ll pluck them one by one using a pair of tweezers! As to why women do it? It’s a girl thing. Enough said.

Whether for hygienic or aesthetic purposes, hair removal has been a part of women’s beauty regimen since time immemorial – be it on legs, underarms, arms, upper lip, and yes, the genital area. Needless to say, women the world over have rejoiced when IPL or Intense Pulsed Light hair removal procedure was introduced. Although the procedure is still as uncomfortable as waxing, it is a lot less painful; and when done regularly, it effectively reduces hair growth.

Seeing the Light

IPL technology is used in the beauty industry in different skin treatments, including hair removal and photorejuvenation. It works by applying specific pulses of light on the area being treated. For hair removal, the light is targeted at melanin in the hair, a pigment that gives colour to the hair and skin. This is the main reason why IPL hair removal procedure is most effective in people who have dark hair, and less so in blondes and light-haired individuals.

For the IPL hair removal to work effectively, treatments should be scheduled during the “growth” phase, or anagen stage, of your hair’s growth cycle. During this stage, about 85% of hairs are in the growing phase at one time. The clinic will advise you on your hair growth cycle, so it’s best to follow the schedule given to you – usually a five-week interval. On average, you will need six or more treatments to achieve the desired results.

With the proliferation of IPL hair removal salons comes the good news of competitive costs of treatment. Depending on the clinic, the cost of one treatment ranges from $135 to 148++ per session. Some clinics have different packages that start from $999 for a year’s treatment or more. The treatment will only take approximately 15 to 20 minutes, including the cooling period before and after the “zapping”. But the actual shooting of the light beams will only take about five minutes, give or take.

The Kinks of the Treatment

Many women would tell you that the pain is tolerable and totally worth it because the treatment really works. Treatment on your underarm is a piece of cake, especially if you’re used to waxing or plucking. Treatment down there, however, is another story.

Many describe the sensation as akin to “a rubber band snapping onto your skin.” It is true. However, I will tell you that unless you have actually tried snapping a rubber band onto your labia, you can never be prepared for the zapping sensation, especially during your first session. First the shot will shock you, then you’ll feel the heat actually penetrating your skin, then comes the lingering pain. And before you get over the first shot, there goes another one, and another. Until you can only grip your towel and wonder why on earth you are actually doing this to yourself and swear never to do it again!

And then two weeks pass by… you’ll notice the hairs are actually falling off, as promised by the attendant. And before you know it, you’re off to your next appointment. Fret not, however, because the succeeding treatments become tolerable. And after the fourth treatment, you’ll be the one dragging your friends to the beach for some impromptu bonding!
